All of these characters are richly and sympathetically imagined, and realized. The book is rich with allusions to literature and music, and one reference specifically informs the project, the poetry collection Spoon River Anthology , by Edgar Lee Masters, which narrates the epitaphs of residents of a small town. The result is beautifully crafted, a rich and textured perspective of small town life, a nostalgic journey that resonates with the world of today. Elsewhere in world, big things were happening.
Instead of small town Ontario and the past meeting the future, Leung is chronicling the suburbs and the possibility of escaping the past. She loved collecting the money at the end of the week from the neighbours, who often slipped her cookies, candy or even a tip. A novel in stories is a perfect container for this book about the suburbs, every chapter a different house on the street.
Open the door and go inside to find a different story, a closet full of secrets, a peek out the window to a new view of the street. In fact, we want it to be true. And the novel exists in this fascinating state of narrative possibility, in-betweenness, a puzzle whose pieces all fit but the surface has two faces. Not to mention the story itself is exhilarating, so hard to put down, rich with comic book twists, explosions, villains, and familiar tropes that are fresh and surprisingly rendered.
And easily one of my favourite books of This was the year my friend got a Wikipedia page. Just once I would like Google Alerts to surprise me—for me this would be a definition of success. It would mean not only that my online mentions were turning up in substantial volumes, but also that I have better things to do than hunt about on the internet looking for them.
Because it would be cheating to create my own Wikipedia page although I have been told that this happens all the time I asked my husband to make mine for me, a really romantic gesture.

And he did. It was really nice, and there I was amongst Canadian authors, and Canadian authors born in , even. The trouble at the start was kind of innocuous. They wanted references and citations, and this was understandable. There was nothing personal about it. I filled in the blanks and added the details. And then the next problem flagged was that my page was not connected to other pages, or referenced by them.
If I could I would have literally underlined that I am in fact a National Magazine Award-nominated author, or bolded the text at the very least. The people, who volunteered their time as Wikipedia editors, were not at all impressed by my accomplishments. And for awhile, I tried to engage with the process, to answer their questions, to fill in the blanks, to vouch for my own notability. But the more I tried, the more adamant the editors became.
And her publication date is so far off into the future that it is likely, especially with the current state of publishing, that her book will never in fact be published. At this point I finally gave up. Although saying this suggests I had more agency in the matter than I actually did. How, I wonder, have they managed to pull it off? A few lessons I took away from this: first, that the whole exercise is remarkably gendered.
The dirt on the bottom of the shoe people I refer to are male. And the second lesson? What the book is really about is messaged in between the lines or, quite literally, between the words. I call her Nadia. Everybody did. From a very young age, I knew who Nadia Comaneci was. Her score of Lafon shows the confusion and crisis and judges and administrators realized what had happened and the scoreboard read 1. Or just abandon numbers altogether. Comma splices are scattered throughout the novel, and I had to consider their implication, what they do to sentences.
On the flipside, television has its own setbacks. The first disadvantage is that there is too much vulgarity and illicit content on television.
There is too much sex, nudity, violence, foul language and grotesque imagery that may have dire consequences on young children. Aggressive and violent behavior among children, young adults and adults can be traced back to too much television in childhood. There are many instances of kids or teenagers using foul language, engaging in sexual intercourses or participating in violent showdowns to copy what they see in movies, music videos and wrestling matches. Too much TV is linked to serious health hazards. Sitting on the couch watching television all day does little to burn excess calorie intake in the body.
As a result, many chronic viewers become obese. Obesity is related to many diseases including diabetes and heart related diseases. It also interferes with the sleep cycle of viewers. Sometimes they watch television late into the night, enjoying only few hours of productive sleep, before going on another binge of television watching. Poor sleeping practices are linked to sleep difficulties, depression, fatigues, headaches and other illnesses. It also affects social interactions.
People who watch too much TV are socially inept. They are withdrawn in social settings, lack the confidence to speak up and cannot hold or start a conversation with strangers. Nothing interests them much like the television. If the situation is not corrected early, they may not be able to enjoy fulfilling relationships in adulthood.
Furthermore, excess television is a waste of time.

People spend a lot of time living in a fantasy world of actors, instead of following their dreams. They do not live a life of adventure and experimentation to discover their hobbies and learn new things. While social surrogacy may distract people from feeling lonely, the problem is that viewers become too attached to characters on TV.

When a popular character dies or something bad happens to them, the people attached to them are affected in the same way, as say when a family member or a friend succumbs to some misfortune. Furthermore, television is very influential. It can be used to manipulate viewers in whichever way it sees fit.

- Advantages and Disadvantages of Television in Our Lives.
Children in America and china are not much different behavior wise because of television, despite the cultural differences and the distance. Television is attributed to unwarranted consumerism that has become synonymous with Americans. We work hard just to spend all our hard earned cash on things like clothes, phones and jewelry, instead of other meaningful stuff like investments and pension plans. We are bombarded each day with hundreds of advertisements and eventually we become connected with the items advertised. We start using whatever we see on our TVs, wear clothes we see celebrities wearing, we adopt slangs and signs used by musicians and eventually our whole life is fabricated to be in line with the television.
It is also guilty of propagating stereotypes for different races. For instance, in movies Black Americans and Hispanics are portrayed to be naturally aggressive and into gangs, Black and Hispanic women are also shown to be angry always, while the marriage life among Whites is basically nonexistent with most of the marriages either in divorce or in rocks with no hope of ever being salvaged. Couple the fact that people believe whatever they see with the influential nature of television, then we have a nation of people who are constantly wary of each other.
It is no wonder that penitentiaries in America are filled with Blacks and Hispanics, while divorce rates among Whites is at an all-time high. All Muslims are basically terrorists thanks to the smearing campaign against all over the world. Programs, such as reality shows and movies can actually take away a bit of your intelligence and make you shallow.
